The Moment I Was Underestimated

May, 2026

There was a moment in 7th grade when I realized I wasn’t just overlooked — I was underestimated.

I had been placed in a special education class for a semester. Not because I couldn’t learn, but because no one had ever stopped to ask what I was carrying. On the outside, I looked like a quiet, underweight kid who struggled in school. On the inside, I was navigating a childhood filled with trauma, responsibility, and silence.

The adults around me — even when they were told, even when things were reported — would never accept responsibility or acknowledgement. So that part was up to me. I learned early that if a parent makes a mistake, you don’t have to repeat it. That’s how the cycle breaks.

Sitting in that classroom, labeled in a way that didn’t match my ability or my potential, something shifted inside me. A quiet voice rose up, steady and determined:

You just wait and see. I’ll show you!

I didn’t rise because the path was easy. I rose because I refused to let other people’s assumptions define my future.

That moment became the beginning of my resilience — the part of me that learned to lead myself long before I ever led anyone else.

May we all become the ones who break the cycles we were born into.
